Project: Triceratops & Ankylosaurus

For an exhibition in Königsfelde near Bonn, we had the opportunity to create two special eye-catchers: a young Triceratops and an Ankylosaurus as animatronic baby dinosaurs. The goal was to design them not only to look realistic, but also to be endearing and approachable—perfect for visitors of all ages at the DinoXperience in Königswinter.

Dinosaur Design & CAD Planning

In the first phase, we drew on current scientific findings regarding the animals’ proportions, posture, and characteristics. This foundation was then translated into a design. Building on this, detailed 3D models were created, incorporating both anatomical features and fine details such as skin texture.

Technical implementation & mechanics

Both figures were equipped with a wide range of movements to create as lifelike an overall impression as possible. Movable elements at the shoulders, hips, tail, and neck ensure natural postures, while eye and mouth movements give the figures additional expressiveness. This results in fluid, realistic movements that make the baby dinosaurs appear particularly authentic.

Surface & Design

In designing the surface, we combined realistic textures with an overall friendly appearance. Skin details, color schemes, and material choices were carefully coordinated so that the figures not only look lifelike but also withstand the demands of daily use.

Delivery & commissioning

Once completed, the figures were installed on site and integrated into the themed area. Thanks to the final fine-tuning of their movements, the two baby dinosaurs blend harmoniously into their surroundings and have quickly become a popular highlight for visitors.
